Grant Reid on succession, family business and eating his own dog food

In an exclusive piece in the September 29, 2022 Financial Times, outgoing Mars Chief Executive Officer, Grant F. Reid, reflected on his eight-year run as CEO and more than 30 years at Mars.

The article highlights Grant’s instrumental role in transforming and diversifying the business – which now includes one of the world’s leading veterinary health businesses, in addition to its traditional pet food brands, such as IAMS™, PEDIGREE® and Royal Canin®, confectionery brands including M&M’S®, MILKY WAY®, Skittles® and EXTRA®, and its food portfolio including Ben’s Original™ and Tasty Bite®.

The piece highlights Grant’s focus on building on the company’s strong foundations to ensure a business that will thrive for generations, leading industry efforts to be more sustainable, and transforming Mars’ own efforts to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, stop deforestation, purge forced labor from global supply chains and encourage healthier snacking habits.

Grant shared that he worked for “real people.” So when he makes a commitment on behalf of the Mars family, it’s a multigenerational commitment. He added, “I might not be here (in the years ahead), but they will.” He notes, “We want to build a business that’s here for the next hundred years, not just my time as a CEO.”

Grant’s legacy of purpose-led performance has yielded tremendous growth and positioned the business for future success.
